Today, I want to talk about music and it is really a big phenomenon which can create magic, It can heal a broken heart and it can make people happy forgeting all their pains and sorrows. In that sence, Music can act as medicine whenever people become sick by the emotional pain. There is no doubt that music is an international language and the people around the world can bind via music. As we know that music has many genres like pop, rock, blues, alternative, rhythem and blues, reggy, metal, folk and many more but the main spirit of music remains the same, just the tempo is different in various kinds of music. If we ask people about their choices in music, we can get a different kinds of replies like some may prefer to listen pop music and others might like rock ballads. But in my personal opinion, people might not have favourite geners though they have test in music according to their mood. We can imagine that when people with broken heart prefer sentimental music, and same people in happy surroundings might want to listen feel good music. Likewise, when we are in gathering we emphasize upon party music rather than pop and sentimental one. It is obvious that people have different test in music and it can be variable according to the situation and the person’s mood.
In my case, I like different geners music, so I can not stick with the same kind of music all the time. If I am listening hard rock by METALLICA right now then by the next time I might have been listening typical nepali folk song by Badri Pangeni and Bima Kumari Dura. Due to this I have different collections from the classic Elvis Presley’s songs to the latest Rihanna’s or from golden Bacchu Kailash to latest Sanoop Poudel. A music or a song is generally formed by the triangular effort of vocal, instrument and lyrics and if anyone of these three is missing then music becomes curry without salt. To make any music worthwile all these three ascepts should equally contribute. For example, when I listen Narayan Gopal I find each and every song of him is excellent in all these three ascepts. His songs like “Samhala ghumto haru…”, “Malai chodi mero chaya…”, “Eutamanchhe ko maya le katti….”, “Parkhe base aula bhani…”,”Chinari hamro dherai puranao….”, “Aljhechha kyare pachaurai timro…”, “Malai na saodha kaha dukha ghau..” and many other songs which are excellent in all these three aspects. Some times I am surprised how he can manage such a beautiful lyrics for his each and every songs. He is really a true singer while these recent singers can never touch the beauty of song whatever Narayan Gopal did in his short span of time.
Apart from Narayan Gopal, there are other singers too who has given us many beautiful songs. Like Aruna Lama, Tara Devi, Premdhoj Pradhan, Deep Shrestha, Prakesh Shrestha, Deepak Kharel, Sapana Shree, Yogesh Baidha, Udit Narayan Jha, Pabitra Subba and Karna Das. These singers also contributed many beautiful songs to our music industry. As a listener I would also like to thank them for providing us many good songs which help us to forget our monotonous and hectic life here in abroad. So, what can I say? I just say music is a friend in my loneliness, Music is a food when I am hungry and Music is the sympathy when I am broken.
Here is the lyrics of one song which I really like…
GOODBYE TO ROMANCE.. By Ozzy Osbourne
Tomorrow will I find the sun or will it rain
Everybody’s having fun except me I’m the lonely one
I live in shame
I said goodbye to romance, yeah
Goodbye to friends… I tell you
Goodbye to all the past
I guess that we’ll meet, we’ll meet in the end
I’ve been the king, I’ve been the clown
No broken wings can’t hold me down
I’m free again
The jester with a broken crown
It won’t be me this time around to love in vain
I said goodbye to romance, yeah
Goodbye to friends… I tell you
Goodbye to all the past
I guess that we’ll meet, we’ll meet in the end
And I feel the time is right although I know
That you just might say to me
What ya gonna do
What ya gonna do
But I have to take this chance
Goodbye to friends and true romance
And to all of you
And to all of you
Come on now…
I said goodbye to romance, yeah
Goodbye to friends… I tell you
Goodbye to all the past
I guess that we’ll meet, we’ll meet in the end
And the weather’s lookin fine and I think the sun will shine again
And I feel I’ve cleared my mind all the past is left behind again
I said goodbye to romance, yeah
Goodbye to friends… I tell you
Goodbye to all the past
I guess that we’ll meet, we’ll meet in the end

Good post Kabir,
I have few things to say, let’s say some friendly disagreements and you can say my personal opinion on music. Like you said “Music is an international language”. I also believe “music is international” but not “language”. To become a language, it should be communicable. I am not saying that music from one part of the world is not liked by the people of other part or they cannot understand it but the most important question is that they cannot communicate via music.
Another disagreement or you say my perception is about the folk songs. You said “Typical Nepali Folk Songs” and gave the names of some artists. I have respect towards these artists but I must say that none of them are folk singers or they have sing any folk song. “Folk” is something you go to the village, live with people, collect the words there, rhythm you collect there, instrument they use you learn about and finally come to studio and record as you find. You can say Tulsi Parajuli and his album “अरुण उपत्यकाका लोकसुसेलीहरु” as the collection of typical folk songs, like the song “लस मा लस नि हौ, मसली पिन्नु…..”, घिन्ताङ्गमा मादल काँ बज्यो सुनकोशी किनारैमा…. which were collected from the original locations. But the artists you mentioned all wrote songs and made rhythm in a room somewhere in Kathmandu or some urban centers and recorded. They have nothing to do with the folk.

Thank You, Dear sajan for your critical comment.
ya I appreciate your words but whatever I wrote here is my personal feelings. Ya I know that many of our folk singers stay in one room and prepare the song. That’s not the real way and I know tulsi parajuli is good singer too but you should not forget Bima Kumari Dura. She has given us many beautiful folk songs which she has collected from her remote village Dura Dada, Likewise Badri Pangeni also made history with the song “Sasurali ma” which he has collected from his village in palpa. But later on he was out of path i know that too. But his first effort was commendable.
Next about the music language, I am talking here about the beat of instrument as a language not the tone or speech.
Anyway thanks for your comment.
